A year after graduating University, I decided to move from Calgary to Vancouver, move in with my girlfriend, and launch my acting career. I packed everything in my dad’s chevy blazer and hit the highway. Once I got to the Coquihalla gates, I realized I might not have enough gas to make it through. As it was further back to Merrit then to continue on, I kept driving. I ran out of gas 45 minutes later. The truck would stall. I’d stop. 5 minutes later it would start and I would drive 5 more minutes. Stall. Wait 10 minutes. Drive 5. Stall. Wait 20. Drive 2. Stall. Eventually I got out, leaving everything in the truck, and started walking.
A truck cautiously picked me up and took me to Hope where I got a jerry can of gas and a cab back to the truck. I rolled into vancouver at 5am. I’ve always thought of this as a metaphor. I had to leave my old life behind in order to start fresh in Vancouver. It’s worked out pretty good!
